Core Experiences for Percussion Primary Students

  • Private Lessons

Two half-hour lessons per week with a collegiate or conservatory-level faculty member.

  • Studio Classes

Join other percussion primary students in weekly studio classes. You’ll learn through masterclass seminars devoted to different percussion instruments, and develop practice and performance techniques together.

  • Chamber Music/Percussion Ensemble

Perform with other percussionists – marimba duets, drum ensembles, tambourine bands, and more! Chamber music ensemble rehearsals occur every-other day.

  • Large Ensembles

Percussion students play in the Festival Concert Band and/or Festival Symphony Orchestra. Repertoire ranges from symphonic works, wind ensemble arrangements, and new compositions. Watch the 2024 Festival Band or the 2024 Festival Orchestra.

  • Recital Performances

You’ll have the opportunity to play a solo piece or perform with your chamber ensemble at the end of LSM in a culminating recital.

  • Handbell Ensemble

This ensemble regularly shares music in worship services, and in the annual Hymn Festival.

  • Worship Music

Play in an ensemble or as a soloist to help lead liturgies, hymnody, or other music in worship services.

Percussion FAQ

Do I have to be proficient on all percussion instruments to participate at LSM?

No. Percussion is a unique area, in that it covers a vast range of instruments. Students arrive to LSM with a range of musical experiences: some have had experience with orchestral percussion instruments (timpani, cymbals, etc.), some are marimba players; others have experience in drumline, others have only played drum kits. Come with what you know – and expect to learn a lot more!
