As a laboratory for musical artistry and learning, LSM continues to develop new music during each summer’s Academy & Festival. We are pleased to share these free downloadable works for students, teachers, church musicians, and others.
Gray Overtures
Lawton Hall, 2024.
For brass quintet: 2 trumpets (in Bb or C), horn in F, trombone, tuba (or bass trombone)
From alumni composer Lawton Hall (LSM 2005-06) comes the first work from the Alumni Composition Commission. “Gray Overtures complicates the traditional brass overture by avoiding the black-and-white triumphalism characteristic of the genre.” This 5-minute brass quintet “demonstrates that shades of gray are not necessarily dull, and that a brilliant spectrum of color can be found by listening deeply and paying attention to the subtlety and ambiguity of life.”
Gray Overtures was premiered at LSM 2024 by Praetorius Brass. View premiere performance.
