A highlight of the evening concert will be Remembering Naomi by acclaimed Michigan City composer Dan Schaaf. The composition honors Naomi Bowman Talbert Anderson (1843-1899), African-American suffragist and Michigan City native. Remembering Naomi uses music, historical narrative, and the words of Naomi Anderson to tell her story. The guest narrator will be Christina Hearne, Director of the Access and Accommodations Resource Center (AARC) at Valparaiso University.
Other compositions on the 7:30 concert include High Intensity by Chandler Wilson, Song for Terra by Yukiko Nishimura, and Patriotic Triptych by Matthew Hibbets. The oboe section will be featured on a concerto by Tomaso Albinoni.
The Valparaiso University Luce Concert Band is one of three components in VU's comprehensive concert band program, and includes musicians from many different majors, and all the professional colleges. Luce Concert Band annually serves the Chapel of the Resurrection by performing for the Reformation Sunday service. In February of each year, Luce Concert Band hosts the Valparaiso University Small High School Band Festival and Sensory-Friendly Concert.
The Valparaiso Community/University Concert Band was founded in 1993 and is open to all interested musicians, regardless of age, without audition. The band appears each summer for Memorial Day at the Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso, the Salute the Recruits dinner at the Porter County Expo Center, the 49er Drive-In Theater in Valparaiso, Hawthorne Park in Porter, and the Porter County Fair. During the academic year, the CUCB performs for the Autumn Concert at VU, Julefest, VU Community Band Festival, Sousa Concert, and the Veterans’ Day dinner at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso.
